Introduction

How do you tell the history of a city? For the Valentine Richmond History Center, we tell it through our exhibitions, programs and tours. For Harry Kollatz, it is the perfectly told story of the people and events that have shaped the life of our city. Through his work in theater and his writing, Harry brings to life both our tragic and inspiring moments with an amazing sense of irony and humor. Accounts of those odd moments and unusual occasions from the past push us beyond our usual understanding.

Through Harry’s writing, we are given a glimpse of a much more human and colorful story. He fills our historic streets and architectural treasures with the spirit of the people and their ideas that still inhabit them today. This collection of stories reflects our history’s challenges and promise.

Harry is a great partner with the Valentine Richmond History Center as we challenge our region to take a fresh look at the history that surrounds us. It takes an imagination like Harry’s to weave together the over one million images in our archives and half million objects in our collections.

Harry Kollatz loves Richmond. He loves its history, its art and theater, its architecture and its people. And I know that you will love these stories.
